I have just set up with Metronet and am very pleased so far. However; I
have installed the modem and set up my connection which seems very fast
(512K
compared to my old dial up) but when I connect it does so through dial up
networking to log on to the net; using my account name and password as
supplied and the telephone no. 0, 35. Can I configure my system so that it
is permanently connected to the net, at the moment I have placed a short cut
to the dial up networking connection in the Windows start up folder but
wondered if there was a better way.

I have an MRI SDL02 PCI modem and am runing Windows ME.

Thanks in advance,

Andy Portess

Using a PCI ADSL adapter is effectively no different from your old 56k
analogue modem and will still use Dial Up Networking. It would be different
if you had, say an external router/ADSL modem and you connected to that via
ethernet. I don't think you'll get away from DUN with your current H/W.

With a PCI or USB modem, your connection will be dropped whenever you log
out of Windows or shut down. Again, an external router/Modem works
independantly of your PC can hold your connection as long it has power.
Like you, I have a PCI ADSL, and have also stuck a DUN shortcut into my
Startup Folder. If you're comfortable about tinkering with Windows
registries, you can create a "run" entry for your DUN shortcut, but it's
little better.
One word of warning - I hope you have some kind of Firewall installed, and
that it is set up to start before the DUN shortcut in Startup gets called.

Connection time should only be a couple of seconds, and I like to have the
option of cancelling the connection at start up.

Thanks Ian. I have now established the following - the connection from the
modem to the exchange is permament and that DUN is required to authenticate
myself to the service provider. My ISP has an firewall configured to protect
my IP address; currently I have set this to block incoming connections but
may change it to block only commonly abused ports. In reality is it likely
that my PC will be attacked?

Thanks,

Andy

I am also using Metronet, although using Linux here. I have enabled
Metronets firewall, but also run a software firewall on each machine as
well.

Thanks to all. I am now downloading Sygate Personal Firewall 5.5 from
zdnet.com

Cheers,

Andy
