Connection failures with fedora

I am getting network connection failures from a variety of apps using
fedora core 2 (freshly upgraded from RH9, which was in turn upgraded
from previous versions ... quite an accumulation of dross in there
probably)

It seems to be DNS related; tcpdump shows the following when mozilla
connects to a website (warning - long lines):

00:33:27.468204 IP 192.168.2.5.32769 > 158.152.1.58.domain: 12438+% [1au] AAAA? www.google.com. (43)
00:33:27.493735 IP 158.152.1.58.domain > 192.168.2.5.32769: 12438 1/1/1 CNAME www.google.akadns.net. (143)
00:33:27.496400 IP 192.168.2.5.32769 > 158.152.1.58.domain: 35850+% [1au] AAAA? www.google.akadns.net. (50)
00:33:27.520225 IP 158.152.1.58.domain > 192.168.2.5.32769: 35850 0/1/1 (118)

00:33:27.547412 IP 158.152.1.58.domain > 192.168.2.5.32769: 17925 2/0/1 A 66.102.11.99, A 66.102.11.104 (82)
00:33:27.551566 IP 192.168.2.5.32769 > 158.152.1.58.domain: 948+% [1au] PTR? 104.11.102.66.in-addr.arpa. (55)
00:33:27.576618 IP 158.152.1.58.domain > 192.168.2.5.32769: 948 NXDomain 0/1/1 (115)
00:33:27.581969 IP 192.168.2.5.32769 > 158.152.1.58.domain: 32917+% [1au] PTR? 99.11.102.66.in-addr.arpa. (54)
00:33:27.606155 IP 158.152.1.58.domain > 192.168.2.5.32769: 32917 NXDomain 0/1/1 (114)
00:33:31.427756 IP 192.168.2.5.33108 > 66.102.11.104.http: S 2020391078:2020391078(0) win 5840 <mss 1460,sackOK,timestamp 3078176 0,nop,wscale 0>
00:33:31.458771 IP 66.102.11.104.http > 192.168.2.5.33108: S 869372958:869372958(0) ack 2020391079 win 8190 <mss 1412>

The first time (00:33:27) it tries and fails, reporting "the document
contains no data". A second attempt (00:33:31) works fine; presumably
mozilla by now has the IP address cached internally.

I've tried using a local named (on the box I'm using, 192.168.2.5)
and my ISP's at 158.152.1.58. I've tried various options in
resolv.conf, though so far without finding a way to turn _off_ IPV6
lookups.

Has anyone seen anything similar and/or found a fix?
