Hi

I was using a Linksys WAG54G on a network consisting of two hardwired PCs
and one wi-fi link, all with XP SP2. The router developed a couple of
problems, including that every day and sometimes more often, I couldn't
connect to the net, or to the router's setup pages - unless I switched it
off then back on again.

I replaced it with a Linksys WAG54GS. The other problem has been fixed, and
I thought the above one had as well, because it went for several days
without happening, but now it's happened twice in the last 3-4 days. A huge
improvement over at least daily, but a PITA nevertheless.

The icon in the system tray says Status connected, but again I couldn't
access any websites, or use email/newsgroups. And again i couldn't access
the setup pages.

I tried the repair connection option in network settings, and after trying
to to renew IP address it just says that attempt failed.

By switching on & off again everything was up and running again.

When this happens, none of the PCs will connect until after the reset.

Where should I be looking? I guess the inability to even connect to the
router must be a clue?

Thanks

A decent router would be a start. The fact that you can't connect to the
setup pages indicates a router lockup.

Get a Draytek Vigor and let us never speak of this again :-)

Thanks for the replies - both comment on the quality of the router - could
you elaborate - is this a make or a model that is seen as substandard?

How could i prove that the one I bought is not working and get a replacement
of another make?

When you mentioned in your OP that you had a couple of problems, what was
the other problem that you had...?

Also when your access to the router gives the problem that you mention have
you noticed if the connection is still showing ok for the Internet on the
router..? For instance on my router I have a green solid light to indicate
that I'm synchronised with the exchange and then another green solid light
when the PPP link is up. If I have had a problem similar to yours I have
found that my sync to the exchange has been fine, so my connection hasn't
dropped as such, but the Internet connection would be down (the PPP link
would have dropped and so the Internet light on the router is no longer
solid green).
Since Easynet did a software upgrade at my exchange this has been a problem
with my connection, but nothing major. Occasionally though I need to phone
my ISP to get them to kill the stale session as I can't get the PPP link
back.
When you can no longer connect to the router or browse etc have you tried to
Shut down your PC and then switch it on again - not simply reboot it.....?

I was getting constant alternating messages that a cable was disconnected,
then that it was now connected. Again that was on all computers on the
network, and even when the phone line was disconnected. That problem has
gone altogether with the new router.

Will have to check - it certainly wasn't showing red, but next time it
happens I'll see if it was still green or just not on.

No, only tried switching router off and back on - that always works. There
are 3 computers in my network, and once one of them is no longer connecting,
none of them do, but they all come back once the router is switched off and
back on again.

Now that it's only every few days it's not such a big problem, but it just
shouldn't be happening of course

Hey Ho,

I alos have got a Linksys Router I think the same one as u, I had dome
problems with the WAP encryption with it, it seems to work fine for 1 -
2 h but the the connection seems to be gone, I could continue my skype
call but could not get up any new wesite or so.

I now use it with WEP encryption and it seems to be ok. Its not the
highest securety level but by the end of the day its ok for me.

It seemes to be a linksys router issue, but it is running without any
further problems.

Bye
