Connecting XP to ME

My Me computer lists the XP computer in the Workgroup and
has full access but the XP computer doesn't show the ME
computer. The XP pings the ME just fine. On Microsoft's
support site I read that I need to enable netBIOS over
TCP/IP but that option is greyed out in TCP/IP,
properties, netBIOS.
What now?
Thanks.

By default, NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled and can't be disabled on ME
unless you install another protocol (which I recommend NOT doing).

To enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on XP:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection and click Properties.
3. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click WINS.
6. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

If that doesn't solve the problem, try these tips:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...c_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

3. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parame ters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".

Dear Steve,
You are my savior! Disabling the Internet Connection
Firewall worked. Such a simple solution and it's not
mentioned on the Microsoft website.
Thanks so much.
Take care,
Holly

Dear Carey,
Thanks for the input. I was able to solve my problem
with Steve's solution of disabling the Internet
Connection Firewall.
Take care,
Holly

You're welcome Holly. Lots of people have network problems caused by
the firewall, so disabling it is the first thing that I suggest in XP
troubleshooting.

Hi Steve,

Would this be why mprexe.exe runs on my system as a (hidden) process
even though I only have tcp/ip installed and 1 network card ? (I have
NetBIOS unchecked in my tcp/ip properties though)

thanks,

Rick

I'm sorry, Rick, but I don't know.

How do you know that mprexe.exe is running as a hidden process? Why
do you ask about it?

well I mean a process that doesn't show up in "Close Program"

Thought it might be part of some spyware that S&D didn't detect.
