I have a laptop and wireless card but do not subscribe to an ISP or have a
router. I can connect to unsecured networks, but not secured ones. Is there a
way to connect with more security without buying a router or subscribing to
an ISP? Or, once I am on the unsecured network can I make it secure?

Hi
Sure you can connect to secure Wireless network.
Provided that the owner gives you permission and the security code.
Otherwise if every one can connect than what is the security all about.
I think that you also confuse a little Internet security with Wireless
security.

I guess what I am looking for is a way to connect securely from my laptop
using a wireless connection, but I do not want to pay for it. Any ideas?

Hi
What exactly you need to be secured from?
Wireless (WIFE) security is controlled by the source (Wireless Router/Access
Point), if you are not in control of the Wireless source there is nothing
that you can do on your own computer.
