Connecting a wireless router to a homeplug

I've currently got a wireless ADSL router downstairs at the corner of the
house where the BT socket comes in, in the hallway. Signal downstairs is
OK, but upstairs it is rubbish. There are no other BT sockets in the house,
other than the master socket in the hallway. Trying to think of an
effective way of getting wireless across the whole house and thought if I
could get a homeplug connection between downstairs hallway (after the
current ADSL router) and then put another homeplug in a central location
upstairs and connect a wireless access point to that, then I could get
coverage over the whole house????

Have thought about getting a wireless homeplug, but most of the reviews I've
seen don't rate them much, hence the reason for getting an access point.

You should be ok just moving the AP higher or fiddling about with the
aerials. You can even make the signal higher on hacked firmware. You
shouldent have to buy extra hardware. At most you might need to buy a few
replacment aerials, directional ones for example. Have you checked for
interference from other APs in your area and making sure your not on the
same channels?

....and some types of older wall construction provide pretty
effective screening of WiFi signals. I get half signal
strength between the hall and an adjacent room. I'd always
use Cat5e Ethernet if absolutely possible - it's cheaper and
works when you walk away from the installation. Replacement
aerials are often expensive and are not guaranteed to provide
a working solution without a prior field survey.
