Connecting web server at home

I am going to deploy a personal web server from a PC running on Linux
(not yet decided, most likely, using Unbutu server).

My home is connected through cable modem (high speed internet) and my
service provider (ISP) changes my modem's IP address frequently (its
dynamic, not static).

How can I resolve the issue of "ever-changing" IP address, so that my
client user would connect my web server, using a name (e.g. http://myWebServer.net
or org or something else) not an IP address ?

I heard about "free Gynamic Name Server" software, which could be
installed on a home network PC, but I need your expert level advice
and suggestion for this issue.

first of all... your probably going to violate your TOS....
second of all... your ISP may not even allow connections to port 80 ( web )
on your network... some cable ISPs block port 80 so that users can't run
a web server.


as for your question... you'll need to sign up with a dynamic ip address
hosting provider like http://www.dynip.com/ and let them maintain your
mywebname.net dns entry. When your machine changes it's IP Address, a
script on your box will notifiy dynip.com of the new ip address and they
will update their DNS server with your new ip address.

You can install one of a number of different syndamic DNS clients that
will keep your DNS up to date, like ddclient.

If port 80 is blocked by your ISP, you may still choose any other port
you wish.

All this is easy to accomplish with IPCOP.org on any Pentium Class machine.
