Connecting to remote drives

I have a Win 2003 server at my office with a shared drive. I sometimes work
at home with XP. I had been able to connect to the shared drive from home by
using its IP address, e.g. \\111.22.33.44.

I just changed my home internet provider from DSL to cable. I've
reconfigured my server firewall for the new remote IP address range.
Everything works fine and I can connect to my server through ftp, http, etc.
but I can no longer connect to the server's shared drive. I'm not sure what
I have to configure. The server doesn't have a VPN setup so I don't think
any major configuration is necessary. But I'm missing a step and I can't
figure out what it is. Any ideas?

If there a different forum I should be posting to, please let me know.

Thanks,

Brian

To access sharing files you need to open some ports. When you used DSL, it
didn't block those ports. It is recommended to setup VPN and access the
remote resource. If you do want to access the sharing over internet, this
search result may help.

Configure ports for sharing
Configure the ports of Firewall or security software to allow sharing.
If you can't access a networking computer or can see it but access, ...

Thanks for the answer. What confuses me is that my cable provider (Charter)
said that they didn't block any ports. It is strange that I have no problem
with any other services or ports except for this one. Do you know which
ports are involved or how I tell if they are being blocked?

Thanks,

Brian

The server is plugged in directly, but is running Kerio firewall. I've
disabled the firewall on both ends, but still no luck.

You mentioned that you "reconfigured my server firewall for the new
remote IP address range"

Is this the windows firewall exception that you reconfigured? If so,
perhaps double-check that you've got the right remote address in there.
You can go to http://www.whatsmyip.org to see what the server will be
seeing as your IP address if you want to be sure.

Finally, why not set up a VPN service on the server? Having the NetBIOS
ports open to the Internet is a really bad idea.
