connecting old computer

Hi...I recently purchased Microsofts Wireless Router
802.11g and the xbox live adapter so my son can play his
games while i'm online at the same time. Was getting
tired of him taking my DSL box everytime he wanted to play
his games!! Anyway, i have an old computer in my basement
which i believe was running Win95 when it was bought but
was upgraded to Win98. Currently it uses a dial-up
connection but i noticed there is an ethernet port in the
back of it (no USB ports). My question is...now that i
have the router...would i be able to hook this computer up
wirelessly using ethernet plugs so i don't have to use the
dial-up and tie up my phone line when i'm on that computer?
And if so...does microsoft make some type of external
ethernet adapter which i could use? I'm am very new and
unknowledgable with all this router stuff and even more
unknowledgable about taking my computer apart to install
something. Any help with this would be greatly
appreciated. I realize it probably won't make this old
computer run any faster but i would just like to do away
with the dial-up. Thanx for any info....Patty

I have a couple of Win98 working here, with XP, 95, and
Unix. The same network install CD works on the 98.

If the 98 is close enough to the router, get an ethernet
cable (like the blue cable that comes with the router),
plug it into the network adapter on the computer, and
install using the router CD. This does not require
opening the PC.

You may also consider using the XBox wireless adapter,
plugging it into the ethernet port of the PC -- it may
require some manual setup and tweaking however -- however
you already have an XBox wireless adapter to experiment
with and it does not require opening the computer.

Otherwise, you may consider either buying:
(a) an USB internal card + the USB wireless adapter, or
(b) the wireless adapter card.

For these cards, you need to open the computer box, and
install the card. Most often it works right out of the
box...

i apologize but i am very new to this. My router is
connected to my newer Win98 computer via the DSL modem on
the main floor of my house. Upstairs, my son has the xbox
live adapter hooked up to the xbox via ethernet plug. The
reason why i bought all this was because i was getting
tired of unplugging my DSL box so he could play xbox live
all the time. And, of course you know, i couldn't get
online when he was playing because he had my modem. My
older Win98 is in my basement hooked up via dial-up at
this time. Being it doesn't have USB ports, i'm guessing
that my best solution would be to open the box and install
the wireless card??? The older computer does have an
ethernet socket on it but i'm gathering microsoft doesn't
make an external adapter that i could just plug into the
ethernet socket kind of like the xbox live?? That would
probably be my easiest solution but you know nothing comes
easy now a days!! Thanx for your help.....Patty
P.S. How would i know if i could open the box and put the
wireless card in it?? Is there any way to tell if there
are open slots left without opening the box??

buy ANOTHER XBOX MN-740 adapter and configure it on the XBOX just like
the first one. when it is working properly, unplug it from the XBOX
and plug it into the thernet port on the the computer basement. make
sure the basement computer is set to DHCP. as long as the wireless is
in range, you will connect.

Are those cheaper where you live? That might be a very expensive solution.

You may be able to check for open slots by looking at the
back of the computer. There should be plates covering the
back of the computer (they are all the width of the
computer if teh computer is set vertically) -- the ones
in use typically show a connector or port on the plate;
the free ones typically have no connector or port,
although sometimes provide internal support.

Another way is to look at the manual -- it should say how
many slots remain available when was shipped, an how to
add cards.

Get a HUB. Connect multiple ethernet devices to the DSL router. HUB = ~$20 -
$30

Get a 10/100 SWITCH/HUB. Connect multiple ethernet devices, including
wireless router to the DSL router. HUB = ~$20 -
$30.

so what you are saying is that i can use the xbox live
adapter as an adapter for the basement computer?? I don't
understand what DHCP is so i would i know if the computer
is set to that. Is there anywhere i can go to check?

i don't know what a HUB is. My DSL router and the
microsoft (wireless) router are connected to my main
computer on the main floor of the house. If it means i
would have to run wires to the basement, this is not an
option. I don't think my landlord would appreciate me
drilling holes into her floors. If you could be a little
more specific as to how a HUB works...then maybe i could
try this approach. Otherwise, i might have to just try
the xbox adapter like the previous post suggested. Thanx
again....Patty
