I never had this issue before.. but we have a 2003 server configured with
RRAS at our work location.. our work location has comcast and an 8-15MBit
down connection and 1mbit upload connection...

In the past.. i would connect via PPTP to this RRAS server and have the full
bandwidth of my Comcast connection at home, which is the same in both
directions there as well..

But now, when connecting.. speed tests show an average of only 1mbit on the
download from the home location (while if i go to a machine on the work side
and test it at that moment, it shows at least 8mbit on the down)..

I'm a bit confused as to why this is happening.. I'm 90% sure this was never
the case in the past...

Its almost like the work vpn is locking the download on the home site to the
upload speed of the vpn connection site?

Thanks in advance

It will do if your VPN is configured to use what your PC will term the
'remote gateway' - all internet traffic will be via the VPN link, therefore
limited by work upload speed, home dowbload speed.

This is the the default setting for most VPN set-ups. Symptom is failing to
access TCP/IP over Ethernet devices in your home while VPN is up.

If you are using MS VPN client, there is a button for this setting in the
set-up.
If you are using Cisco, you need to configure 'split tunneling'.

Thanks! This was the ticket.. not sure why though, in the past i never
noticed this.. its like it just now started slowing things down by being
checked.. odd.. but the uncheck works.

Now if i could just figure out how to "secure" the login phase with SSL, I'd
be set...
