Hi - I am having trouble pinging between my linux machine and my
windows 98SE laptop - the hosts file on the win98 machine looks like:

127.0.0.1 localloop...
198.162.100.98 baldy (laptop)
198.162.100.99 vail (linux machine)

Similar hosts file on the linux machine. The DLink card was configured
with Yast2 on the Linux machine (running Suse 6.4)and I have a Netgear
PCMCIA card on the laptop. I am reasonably certain that both cards are
configured properly. Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
El Squid

What sort of trouble are you having? What does the ping command say,
and what does the error message say?

Make sure that a firewall program isn't blocking access to either
computer.

BTW, those IP addresses should start with 192.168, not 198.162.

Yes - it is 192.168.100.99 and no, there is no firewall.
The dialogue looks like

pinging 192.168.100.99

Request timed out...

Ping statistics
Packest sent = 4 Received = 0...
