Hi everyone,
I would like to connect my laptop, which has Redhat Linux installed, to the
Internet through my desktop which has an ADSL connection to the Internet. I
already have networking up and running but can't figure out how to get the
Internet connection working.

TIA

Steve

Well your subject indicates the desktop is Windows XP.

Would not that question be placed in a Micro$not news group?

Well I had considered it but thought the Linux community would be more
knowledgeable

It regularly comes up here, and we regularly tell them to do it the
other way around.

To the OP: it really is reckless to depend on a MS machine for security.
Any old piece of junk which can run Linux can also do firewalling and
NAT for a typical broadband connection and multiple clients. I did it
with a 386DX33/8MB RAM. It never broke a sweat.

If you're stuck behind the XP box for reasons real or imaginary, I think
all you have to do is set your client to use DHCP. Consult your distro
documentation to see how to do that. And yes, consult MS and MS forums
for information pertaining to MS services.

I understand, but if we start answering Micro$not questions here it
would be like feeding bears on the back porch. Pretty soon there in
the kitchen and very hard to get rid of. You not allowed to shoot
them.

You may want to read http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
I assume your using a cross-over cable and you have been looking at the

Network Administration Tool
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...rk-config.html

or netconfig which sets up the network files
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...netconfig.html

which are
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...rkscripts.html

of which the contents have
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...nterfaces.html

For some light reading

I have a Linux firewall/router. However, many people would rather not build
something like that.
