Recently one of my two computers has been having some
problems connecting to the 'net. I get a DNS error every
time I try to load a webpage through Explorer, and I
can't figure out what the problem is. I can ping an IP (I
contacted Comcast's tech support, and we tried some
things - I could ping comcast.net by IP, but not as
www.comcast.net), but not a named server. Also, when I
try to ping local host it goes through the procedure, but
returns a "Destination specified is invalid." error on
each of the four lines where there would normally be the
reply. I've tried reinstalling winsock.dll and
winsck32.dll or whatever it's called, which is apparently
the most common fix for my problem. Another thing is that
I can't connect to ANYTHING in Internet Explorer -
whether I use IP or a url. I've tried reinstalling my
TCP/IP protocol, and I've tried everything else I could
think of, but I haven't had any luck. One other thing I
noticed is that when, say, I go to play a few rounds of
Counter-Strike against some bots on a local server that I
create, it runs the IPX connection just fine, but it has
an error with the TCP/IP connection (I can still play
though, since it's a local game, just no one else on the
network could connect to my game). Any ideas?
I'm running a Win98SE machine with Comcast High Speed
internet, I'm using a 3com ethernet adapter which appears
to be running normally, and everything else on the
computer seems to be working.
