At present I have a network between a laptop(WinXP HE) and a desktop (Win
98SE) with a crossover cable.
When Broadband is available in this area I intend using it. Will the
connecting cable from the Broadband modem direct to the laptop only give me
access to the internet aswell through the crossover cable?

If you want to connect multiple computers to your home network, the
easiest thing would be to buy a router. You plug this in to the broadband
modem and plug your computers in to the router. I bought an Edimax one
from Aria (www.aria.co.uk) to use on ntl broadband and it was pretty much
plug and play. This will allow up to four computers and at the time (15
months ago) was about GBP50.

Internet connection sharing that you are using now would still be possible
using broadband IMO.

Hi,
Further to previous suggestion to use ICS - if you don't like, or have
problems setting up ICS, then you could try ccproxy.
It's a small free download that makes the PC with the broadband connection
intoa proxy server - http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/index.html
My 2 PCs run Win98(First Edition) which doesn't have ICS, and I've used
ccproxy for
nearly a year and found it very stable and reliable.
My configuration -
