Running win server 2003 on this computer. I connect to the internet via a static IP through a router, than a modem. I want to connect another computer to this one for file/printer remote access etc. The other computer is running win XP prof. is also connect to the internet through the same router with a different static IP. I know this is a probably a simple problem. But not even know where to start to solve it makes hard for me to solve. Thank you in advance. Please feel free to CC to my email if you need any further info. I will try and bookmark this site and check back. Thank You.

I think you forgot to tell us about your problem.

If both computers are on the same subnet, with private IPs, you should have
no problems access the other computer.

Both are on the same subnet 255.255.255.248 as per my ISP. They both connect to the internet fine. But do not "see" each other. Just installed win 2003 server on this one. Asked me some questions about DNS resolution address, etc. I don't think the DNS supplied by my ISP worked so I put in the static IP for this one, Perhaps my problem? I also have a gateway of: 64.167.167.86 on both computers as supplied by my ISP. I am sorry if I am not asking this well. The soloution is probably something that isn't too complicated. I just don't know where to start. Thanks again

Kristofer Gafvert, thank you for trying to help me out. I had checked about a million things, and it ended up being something very simple. A firewall enabled on the winxp workstation. Sometimes I can be pretty stupid. Thanks.

It all depends on how these machines are physically connected to each
other (and to the router).

Does the router have similar multiple inputs like a hub or switch?
Is each machine plugged into one of these with a standard patch cable?

If each machine has a public IP like 64.167.167.8x and a subnet mask of
255.255.255.248 and is plugged into the router, you should be able to "see"
one from the other. First up, can you ping one machine from the other by its
IP number? If this fails, there is something wrong with the actual
connection or the IP addresses.

If you can ping by IP address, try a ping by name.

I am a bit concerned about this setup. Do you really want these
machines to use "real" IP addresses? The normal situation is for the
machines on the LAN to use private IP addresses and use a proxy server or
NAT to access the Internet. You say you want to configure a server for
remote access. This also implies a private LAN. If your LAN is using
registered public IP addresses, you don't need a remote access server. Every
machine can be directly accessed through the Internet!

I agree with Bill Grant, now when you have disabled the firewall on both
computers, are they protected? Can your gateway/router act as a firewall? I
think that would be the best solution, something that is in front of both
machines, but not between them. That will give you good security, and you
will be able to share files.

I am sorry, thank you all for your kind help (although I will take any book suggestions, I like good books on computers). I had my firewall enabled in win2003. Now my remote console works. I am so stupid about simple things sometimes. I was looking all over differnt books, internet, help, etc. and cound'nt figure out what I had configured wrong, so I posted the questions here. I was looking all over the forest and only had to look at the tree in front of me (symbolic, not actual tree/forest a la microsoft). Thank you again for taking the time to help me and sorry if I wasted your time
