Connecting 2 routers together wirelessly

Hello all,

I have a new Linksys WRT54GS wireless router and an older BEFW11S4
wireless-b router that I'm hoping to be able to network together wirelessly.
I need to be able to put the older router in a separate area of my home and
connect an HP JetDirect print server box to it (via a Cat5 cable) so I can
send prints to an area away from my PC.

I've spoken to the Linksys tech. staff 3 separate times, and frankly, they
seem clueless. Either they can't understand what I'm trying to accomplish, or
there's a communication barrier that I can't break through.

Anyway... does anyone know if this is possible? I can get the 2 devices to
connect when they're attached via cabling, but when trying wirelessly nothing
happens.

Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks.

Some wireless routers may include a bridge or repeater mode that could do
this but most don't. You would need to check the documentation for both
units and see if they have such options and how to configure them.
What you really need is a wireless print server (instead of your Jet
Direct). See http://tinyurl.com/cgrhl for a selection.

Many thanks for the prompt reply.

And yes... I'm beginning to think a wireless print server is the way I'm
going to have to go with this. In looking through the device documentation
and web administration utilities, unfortunately neither of them include a
bridge or repeater mode or a configuration setting to alter that enables the
wireless functionality between the 2 devices. Wired isn't a problem
however... they both see each other fine.

Anyway... I'll leave the question open in case other members have
expereinced this type of issue and have come up with a workaround. But I DO
appreciate your input.

Take care.

I wanted to do the same thing a couple of years back, and all I got from
Linksys Support was that briding is not supported, but it may be included in
future firmware updates... I did not cross my fingers, instead I went and
bought two Apple Airport routers and called it a day. Expensive, yes, but it
works like a charm and has been working flawlessly for 1,5 year. Later when
the Airport Express came out, I got two of those as well and streamed music
to my front and backyard, and that's actually all you need because they
support bridging too, and they are cheaper. I have a mixed Apple and Windows
network, which of course helped since the managment tools for Apple probably
are far easier than the Windows ditto for Apple network products. If you have
a friend with a PowerBook for the configuration which takes 15-30 minutes
tops, you're good to go with any computer after that...

One of the things that made Linksys routers really popular was that they
were -- until the current version of the WRT54G -- Linux-based, which
enabled tinkerers (I hesitate to call them hackers) to create their own
firmware modules for these routers. There's a bunch of customized
firmware available for Linksys routers that will do all sorts of tricks,
including bridging. Unfortunately, the WRT54G v. 5 switched to a
proprietary OS. I don't recall if that applies to the WRT54GS as well.
