Connect Windows 2000 to windows 98

All I want to do is share files between two computers. I have one Windows
2000 computer and one Windows 98. I also have a 3COM Superstack II Switch
3300. I have enabled file sharing and a Workgroup on both computers. Click
Computers near me and I only see the current computer, and not the other.
What I'm I forgeting to do? Mike

If one (or both) of the machines has a firewall...
it also needs to be configured

Your 3Com unit is a switch and not a router. It does not contain a
DHCP server to assign IP addresses to the connected computers.

Therefore you will have to configure your network manually, including
the IP addresses. These are entered in the Properties section of the
TCP/IP networking protocol.

In order to comply with the usage conventions for IP addresses the
ones you use should be in one of the designated non-routable ranges
such as 192.168.xxx.yyy where xxx and yyy are numeric values between 0
and 255. You need to use the same value for xxx on both computers
and a different value for yyy on each. Examples would be
192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101

Both computers need to have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

The workgroup name needs to be identical on both computers.

File and Printer (network service) sharing needs to be enabled on one
or both computers and the specific drives/folders that will be shared
need to be specified as such (Properties of the drive or folder).

share a Internet connection to these two computer through the switch?

It would be, but doing so is cumbersome and requires an additional
network card installed in one of the computers, enabling and
configuring Internet connection sharing on that computer,
reconfiguring the manual IP addresses for the network, software
firewalls for the computers, etc etc.

A home/soho router can be purchased very cheaply at major electronics
stores if you shop around a bit. Last week our local Staples store
had a D-Link 4 port router (not wireless) on for $29.95CDN.

With that there would be no need to configure the network manually
(the router has a DHCP server incorporated) or to install software
firewalls. Just plug it in, connect the Internet to the WAN port,
connect each computer to one of the four LAN ports, and you would be
ready to go, networked and both computers on the Internet.
