Connect a Linux and a Windows 98 computer

Hi

I've have a Linux computer on which I run a web server. I want to
access
the generated webpages of the web server, from another computer where
Windows 98 is the operating system.

My question is about to configure my two computers in a network, so I
am able to write the address of a web page on the web server, and
display the content in a browser on my Windows 98 computer.

What configuration files do I need to change in Linux and Windows98?
And do I need a hub between the computers, or is it possible to
connect directly by a network cable?

I need practical advice, about how to configure this small network!

Regards,
Andy

I would use samba server on the linux and write to the network shared,
update your page from the html editor on windows side, then run the
webserver on linux for viewing.

Apparently you can cross-connect 2 computers with a "cross-over" LAN
cable. Personally, I would get a hub, probably (wireless?) with ADSL/cable
WAN port. You'll probably need that soon anyway. That makes connections
much easier (to debug also). Adding another PC is easy.

I think we need more information on what the OP really wants to do.
Personally, I would just run a web browser on the Windoze machine and run
apache web server on the Linux machine. You do have to setup the apache
configuration because you only see what it wants to show. It's reasonably
easy, though. There's one place where you specify "DocumentRoot". For more
specific help, we would have to know more specifics (which Linux, which
apache, etc.).

If he wants to update from the Windoze side, then I agree with you, Samba
would be the best solution. I would create an SMB share on the Linux
machine for "DocumentRoot" (identical to apache config). Then you can open
that from the Windoze side and tinker away.

BTW, the OP mentioned "generated webpages". Are there running programs
that are generating dynamic content? That might make a difference?

You can connect the two using just one wire, a crossover cable. In
this case, connecting only two computers, the crossover cable acts
just like a network hub. (I will leave the software part for someone
else to explain, as the only way I know how to connect to the Linux
box from Windows 98 is to login using SSH.)

You can connect two computers directly without a hub using a crossover
ethernet cable. Be sure to use a crossover cable as a straight-wired
cable will not work.

With 10 baseT correct. 100baseT will autodetect and work with both a straight
and a crossover cable.

That depends entirely on your hardware - has nothing to do with the
speed of the connection!

SOME, not all 100baseT equipment will autoconnect. In fact, some that's
supposed to, won't.
