connect config ?

I just got a Netgear WGR614 Router and a WG511 Wireless PC card (for my
laptop)
I'm with Earthlink
Win98se
SpeedStream DSL modem

I used to use a Netgear DS104 hub and 2 netgear FA310TX PC cards but I
wanted wireless access for my laptop so I dumped the Hub.
Still have the FA310TX PC cards in the desktops.

Right now I've got the modem connected directly to the FA310TX PC card and
using WinPoet I am able to connect.
Albeit slow, with freezing. (don't know if it's my 400 mhz computer or
earthlink or WinPoet, my phone lines, or whatever). (however, it's always
been like that).

So, I'm trying to get WinPoet and all it's associated adapters out of the
loop.
Hopefully that will speed things up a bit.
I've read that there is a way to connect (as an earthlink subscriber)
without using WinPoet. (But, I don't understand most of what I've read.)
How do you do this?

Also, when connecting this way, (without WP) do you still see the little
"connected" icons on the toolbar?(those 2 little TV screens) Or, if you
have an always on connection, do those go away?

Also, does "network neighborhood" have anything to do with an internet
connection? Or, is that just for the network of computers in my house?
Should it be set to "Windows Logon" or " Client for Microsoft Network"?

thanks for any help. I've been at this for 2 solid days.
Tim

Doesn't the router come with a four port switch? You should be able to
use the wired machines with standard NIC(s) and plug them into the router
to share the Internet with wired and wireless machines connected to it.

You should be able to dump Winpoet now because the router can be
configured to make the connection to the PPPoE ISP and the machines will
not need Winpoet anymore. The router has a Max. Transmission Size setting
you may need to adjust to connect to the PPPoE ISP, check with the ISP.

I don't think that Win 9'x O/S have the Icon. Win 2K and up can do it.

No, with the router as the gateway for the LAN and WAN, it will represent
the machines you can access on your home network on the LAN side of the
router, if the O/S on the machines have been configured by using Client
for MS Network, and MS File and Print Sharing.

Use Google to search on How to Setup MS File and Print Sharing.

Protect the MS Networking Ports with a host based firewall on the
machines, use Google to find out about the ports.

Yes...... You should be able to ? But, I can't.
I've been on the phone with Netgear support but to no avail.

What I'm trying to figure out is.
Where and how do you set up an internet connection and home network
bypassing/deleting WinPoet.
(I figure that without WinPoet "in the way", I will get a better/faster
connection as it loads the iVasion stuff? )

When I say where and how I mean:
I want the computer to boot up without the Windows password screen and be
online.
I want to share files and internet between 3 computers.
I don't care about security locally. (within my house)

Where do I set it up?
In "internet options/connections"
or "network neighborhood/TCP/IP->Netgear Fast Ethernet Adapter "
or both or other or?

What are the settings I need to enter and/or delete/change????????

Do i use the numbers in 'winipcfg' ?

I have a feeling that Earthlink doesn't want you to be able to have a home
network without paying them an extra $9.95 a month.

Yes, they do. I'm on 98se and I'm looking at them right now.
My question is, Do I need/want these icons to be there?
(I had a connection without them once).

What is LAN and WAN ? I know Local area and wide area network. But, what
does that mean?

So, then I need to set up the machine with Client for MS Network? (as
apposed to Windows Logon)
So, no clean boot to windows/internet?

> Use Google to search on How to Setup MS File and Print Sharing.

I've been googling my brains out for the past 2 weeks and can't really find
what I'm looking for.
Most links want to sell me something and not give simple information.
I don't think it should be so complicated.
I have 2 desktops (wired) and one wireless laptop with the router and cards
and modem above.
What are the settings so that everything works and where do I set them??

Sorry if I seem a bit agitated.
Thanks for the help.

Like on my Linksys router, the functionality for the administration of the
routers is just about the same for all models. The link using Acrobat
Reader (you'll have download free if not installed on a machine) tells you
how to set the Netgear router for PPPoE. It has to be very close to you
router model.

http://www.fulton.net.au/relnotes/ReleaseNotes_2.50.PDF

I don't think you need WinPoet period on the machines once you have the
router make the connection.

The NIC's should be setup for the basics for just accessing each other on
the LAN side of the router with only the NIC protocols and services on the
NIC's to make them share resources. Once you do that, I don't think you
need anything else on the computers to make the connection to EarthLink.

The router is the gateway for the Internet WAN and the LAN for the network.
The router has everything in its software to make the connection to the
ISP.

Before you had the router, the machines had to have WinPoet and whatever
other software and or settings needed to make a direct connection to
EarthLink. Now, I don't think you need all that software anymore on the
machines.

Do you know how to setup the machines with the required protocols and
services on the NIC's to make them share resources on a LAN? Search Google
on that.

You may need to be aware of the MTU MAX Transmission Unit size that the
router may need to be set to so that it can connect to the PPPoE.

1) Make the machines using the router without all that Earthlink software
installed, share resources with each other on the LAN side of the router.
Forget about doing anything wireless and make it work with the wire
connection first.

2)After you have done 1 above, configure the router to make the PPPoE
connection to the EarthLink network.

3) Try the EarthLink forum as someone else has tried to do this.

4) If all else fails, go to Britsys www.britsys.com they are nationwide in
the US and they will bring everything (router and all) and hook you up.
Then all you need to do is get a wireless Access Point and plug it into the
router and go on about your business. <g>

HTH and good luck.

Thanks Duane.

Well, I've got an internet connection on 2 desktops.
got rid of WinPoet.(I think)
haven't approached the wireless laptop yet.
Don't really know what fixed it all.

Now, I'm having a little trouble with the networking (sharing computers).
When I had the old hub, I set up SHARE folders on each computer.
But now, I can access the SHARE folder on the 2nd PC from the 1st PC ,but
not visa versa ?
Also, I can't even access the 1st PC's own SHARE folder? (via network
neighborhood).

I noticed in the winipcfg program that the 1st PC's IP is 192.168.0.3
and, the second computer is 192.168.0.2.
Isn't that wrong? shouldn't the 1st PC be 192.168.0.2 ?
Or, doesn't that matter.

I've tried everything I can think of to get the 1st PC to be 192.168.0.2 but
it won't go.
(basically started over. reset the router and install program etc.)

any ideas on any of this?
Thanks
Tim

If you have FW(s) on the machine, which you should have on them to
protect the Windows Networking Ports, you may need to drop them until you
get sharing to work. It's most likely due to some configuration issues on
the machines.

IT doesn't matter, but you can manipulate the router's DHCP table which
ties a NIC's MAC to the IP it assigns to the NIC. Or you can use one of
the router's static IP. You can go to the Netgear site Support Knowledge
Base on how to set the machine to use a static IP.

Hi Duane.

I was curious about the different logon choices:
Client for MS Networks
Windows Logon
MS Family Logon (only on the laptop)

I have the 2 desktops set to Windows Logon & the laptop set to MS family
Logon now and everything seems to be working.
(they were set to Client for MS Networks, but I thought I'd try the WL).

Am I missing something by not using "Client for MS Networks" to Logon?
Or, will this screw up use of my analog 56k fax modem?
It just seems to me that (I'm assuming) that Client for MS Networks requires
more drivers and stuff to be loaded and that "Windows Logon" would therefore
maybe make everything faster ??
Plus, I don't have to click the Logon box or enter any passwords.

I dunno, that's my illiterate take on it all.

I've found so much conflicting information as I surf around regarding TCP/IP
settings etc.
Seems most of it was written pre-router. I think.

Right now I'm mulling over NetBios. huh. Some say use it some don't mention
it. It's grayed out in my TCP/IP properties so I don't know if I'm using it
or not?

Also, Do I need the green Dial Up adapter if I have the green netgear PCI
adapter installed?

just trying to go faster,
thanks
Tim

I don't think so on the speed, if any thing it will make a machine on
your network easier to compormise.

I think that is bad news also. On all my machines one must login to the
network. And I use Client for MS Network on all my machines.

NetBios should not be grayed out, you may have to install it from the CD.
If you use NETbios, the make sure the Windows Networking Ports are
protected by a host based firewall on the machine, setting the rules to
only let router IP(s) communicate on the ports. I use NWlink IPX/SPX
Netbios compatible on all my NT based machines, because WEP and Netbeui
do not like each other when setting up the wireless machine to share
resouces with the wired ones. You should protect the MSNP(s) anyway, no
matter what protocol is being used on the machine.

This may help as I don't take the security of the home network lightly.
There are too many people out here on the Internet that don't and are
being *hacked* to death and don't even know it.

http://www.uksecurityonline.com/index5.php

Use Google and find some topics on *wireless security for the home*.

You should turn on the router's logging and review traffic to and from
the router on a routine basis.

You can use Active Ports (free) to watch connection on the machine in
real time. I like to put a short-cut in the Start-up folder and it's one
of the first screens to show so I can see what's happening on the
machine. That's when malware will try to send data out before other
protection features on the machine can start to stop it.

use the HOST

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
http://accs-net.com/hosts/HostsToggle/

The protection starts with the O/S and everything else is secondary to
the O/S, including the router, host based FW, and AV, if you have one
that can be configured to do it such as an NT based O/S.
