This question should be simple for you lot hopefully.
I have a desktop PC and a laptop. They both have wireless cards. I wish to
connect them so that I can shared files. How is this done? Thanks.

Since you don't have a WAP involved, set both wireless cards to use
ad-hoc mode to create a low-level network. Then, follow normal Win
methods (for the specific flavors of WinWhatever you have) to create
the high-level network on top of the link-level wireless net; wireless
is not really different from wired (ignoring speed, reliability, and
security issues).

Thanks for the help. I finally managed to get them to connect using the ad
hoc method you mention. The only trouble now is I am a bit worried about it
being insecure. I didnt have to put in any password or anything. If my
neighbor, say, had wireless networking, he would easily be able to connect
to my computer. How do I make it more secure?

The easiest thing to do is to enable 128 WEP.

How do you enable WEP? I have been trying for the past hour to get it to
work with no success. The network icon in the sys tray seems to be saying I
am connected but I am no longer able to look at files on the other computer
or connect to the internet through it. I assume this must mean the
encryption is failing.

To set it up, what I have done is enable WEP on both computers, tick the
box that says "Create with pass phrase", select 128 bits and then typed the
same pass phrase on both computers. Is this what you are supposed to do?

My network cards are:

Belkin Wireless 54mps Notebook adapter
netgear wg311 802.11g wireless PCI adapter

Finally managed to get it to work. Typed in the number in hex instead of
ASCII characters and that did the trick. Seems that the pass code
generation on different wireless network cards must be different or else
bugged.
