Hello, I currently have a wired lan using a cable modem and nat router (US
Robotics 8003) to connect two desktops. I want to add wireless access for
laptop upstairs. Question; do I need to add a "switch" between the router
and the wireless ap or can I just plug the ap directly into the router. I
realize I also need wireless adapter for laptop upstairs. Thanks.

If you already have a wireless AP (or a wireless router that you intend
to use as a wireless AP), just connect it to one of the USR router's LAN
ports. If you use a wireless router as an AP, make sure to turn its
DCHP sever off -- you want only one DHCP server on your network. You
should also change the wireless router's LAN-facing IP address. For
more info, see http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

Alternatively, replace the USR 8003 with a wireless router. Most
home-use wireless routers today include 4 wired LAN ports.
