I was experimenting with someone's setup over the weekend. Their router (a
Luksys, if it's important) had lost its config and thus would not connect to
the internet. It was also not possible to ping it, initially. Since it was
not responding to the IP address (10.0.0.100 - one I find easy to remember)
I got one of the family to change it to use DHCP and was able to connect.
I'd make sure that (1) the SSID on the router is something unique and not a
'default setting', and that the PC can 'see' that SSID. If you had set up
encryption before, then the USB device might 'see' the network but not be
able to get a proper connection (and possibly be allocated some odd IP -
I cannot remember the number now, but 159.x.x.x rings a bell) So (2) if
you know there is WEP encryption, set it up on the router from scratch ,
and the PC's USB connection might then be established properly. But (3)
if you have MAC address filtering on (on the router) then is there any
chance the MAC address of the USB unit has been changed (it might not
generally be possible, but I've seen settings changed, with bad effect)
