I need help configuring a Netgear MR814 wireless(b) router/switch to
work as a wireless AP for my existing network. The setup is dsl modem
connected to a Linksys Router. 3 wired computers hanging off that,
with the Linksys providing DHCP (192.168.1.xxx with Mask
255.255.255.0) when needed. I pulled the cable out of the PC that will
soon be wireless and connected to the WAN port of the Netgear, and
then wired from one of the Netgear LAN ports to the NIC on the PC. I
have assigned a wan address to the Netgear, turned off its DHCP, &
pointed to the wired router as the Gateway. On the LAN side, I set an
IP address(tried reusing the WAN address, eg 192.168.1.201 and using a
different one, eg ...202 if the WAN is ...201), same mask as above.
The problem is that from the (soon to be wireless) pc, I can ping the
Netgear but nothing else. From the wired side of the network, I
cannot ping the Netgear or the pc but the rest of the network is
working ok. What have I missed in setting up the Netgear box as an AP
(not counting the wireless part which is not in the picture yet)? Pls
no wrong-group quips :-) Any advice appreciated.
Misc details:No duplicate addresses on network. All PCs are w2k. Left
the two MAC addresses unchanged. On the LAN settings: RIP=none (tried
with both). Remote Access doesn't change anything. All lights normal
(pwr, wan, wireless, lan all green). Wanna-be wireless PC currently
using fixed IP.
Detail worth asking too:
An AP would not need to know DNS server (?) but I tried it with 1).
automatically get it, 2) using my ISP numbers and 3). (currently)
pointing to the router (which knows the local names after all).
TIA, Tom
