Configuring Multiple NICs

Windows Server 2003 Enterprise
Dell Power Edge 6600

We have a server, which has multiple NICs in it. We assigned each card an IP
address (192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.11). Now, we see errors in our system
event log:

A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network. The IP address of
the machine that sent the message is in the data. Use nbtstat -n in a command
window to see which name is in the Conflict state.

Obviously, we've mis-configured something. Our goal is for the 2 NICs to
load balance on the network.

Someone told me that I should only have 1 IP, and the two cards should be
bonded to that single address, however they could not tell me how to do so.

What am I missing in the configuration of this system?

There is special NIC software that should be bonding your NIC's (such as
Intel), what kind of NIC's do you have? The error is because you have two
NIC's on one machine in one subnet.

They are Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit. They are actually both onboard on the
Dell PE6600.

you'll have to go out to Dells site and download the software. If you dont
see any software go to Broadcom and verify those NIC's can be bonded and
they should have software as well.

HP makes some.
I think they have to be identical Nics (little unsure). The Nics will come
with whatever proprietary software they need to do the job. Some of those
multiport nics (single card with more than one port, often 4) may have the
ability and come with software, you'll have to verify that with whatever you
get. We have one of those type of Nics here but we don't use it in the way
you are asking,...each port is a different subnet with it.

But trying to do it with a pair of mis-matched Nics that just "happen" to be
in the machine,...I doubt you would have much luck. This article describes
what you will typically get with that:

This is normal behaviour. It is because netbios is enabled on both
interfaces and this causes the machine name to be broadcast twice thereby
leading to the error. Old problem with a old solution. Disable the netbios
binding on one of the cards.

Adapter teaming in recommended and the software is on the broadcom cd that
came with the server.

Sorry to break into you thread but is teaming ok in a win2003 exchange 2003
clustered environment?
