If a member server doesn't connected to the DC , will it still works ? I've
configured a member server but the DC machine is down and when i click the
AD user and computers it prompt that domain cannot be contacted. I was
wonder that whether i configure the member server correctly ?

Hello Daniel,

If you have only one DC and this machine is down no user can login to the
domain and also ADUC can not connect to the Active directory. AD is stored
on DC's not on member servers.

Hi, i thought member server were to support DC to enable user login and
backup like old NT BDC. Isn't that its function ?

Hi,
Member server is just a member of domain like other desktop or laptop
computers. ADUC is just like a MMC which connect you to DC to manage it.
If DC is down you can not connect with it.

Just join it to the domain would become member server ? or need to go
through setup wizrd in active directory to add it as additional domain
controller ?

Yes, you need to use dcpromo to set up a second DC. There is no point in
doing it if the new server cannot see the existing DCand access the AD
config files.

By using dcpromo is it a member server or just add AD to it to become
additional DC in the domain ? If it is additional DC why does it still need
to connect to first DC ?

When you run dcpromo you select the option to make it an additional
domain controller in the existing domain. It needs to be able to connect to
this existing domain controller to see the Active Directory files. Even if
it was in a new domain it would still need to access the existing DC (unless
you also put it in a new forest as well).

Once you have made it a DC in the existing domain, the AD files will
replicate to the new DC.

Once the AD file are replicated, can it be restored to AD if it needs to be
recovered ? Assume i have only 1 DC.

That question doesn't make any sense. If you have replicated the AD files
to a second DC, you have two DCs. How could you assume you have only one?
