Hi all,

I've got a Compaq WL310 access point. It is functioning properly though I am
having trouble configuring the device.

Compaq uses a program for configuring the device rather than through http.
When I try to login to the wireless router, the program tells me it can't be
found and I should check the settings. These are, obviously, correct because
I can use my wireless connection.

Has anyone had the same problem? I've tried many possible solutions but
nothing worked so far. I could try upgrading the firmware (dunno where to
find it) but I don't know whether it is the device it's fault or the
software's.

Next monday I am expected to tell some about WiFi security at our local
computer club and it would be nice to have my own AP secure by then.

Thanks!

Rens

I couldn't find the manual for this device on HP's web-site, but I did find
the firmware:

I use a WL510

I went to the Compaq/HP web site and downloaded their "Compaq\AP
Manager(wman_ap.exe)" setup programe

Once the software is installed I found that I still couldnt set the thing
up...Until... I set the Local IP to the default of the Access Point:

Heres a snip from the main help within the AP manager software
:

To connect to the Base Station, you need to address each Base Station via
its IP address.

· If your network includes a BootP or DHCP server, the IP address will be
assigned automatically.

See also: About IP addresses and Subnets

· In situations where no IP addresses are assigned automatically, the IP
address will be 153.69.254.254. You must change this factory-set IP address
(153.69.254.254) upon first configuration.

To connect to the Base Station proceed as follows:

1. In the main AP Manager window, select the Base Station that you wish to
configure from the list, or enter the IP address in the field Enter the IP
address for a specific Base Station.

· A new Base Station is marked with a special icon.

· This list will display all Base Stations located on the same IP Subnet as
your LAN Administrator Station.

· To gain access to Base Stations on a different Subnet or via a dial-up
connection, enter a specific IP address in the field.

2. Select one of the following options:

· To Edit or View a Base Station Configuration click the Edit button.

· To Monitor Base Station Bridging Statistics click the Monitor button.

3. If the Base Station that you select is identified by the factory-set IP
address 153.69.254.254, you will be prompted to change this IP address.

a. Enter a unique IP address for the Base Station in the field IP Address.

- If you select an IP address from a range of assigned IP addresses, make
sure it falls within the same subnet as the other Base Stations within your
network.

- If you assign a User defined IP Address to the Base Station, you can
simply change the last three digits of the default IP address
(153.69.254.xxx).

b. Record the IP address.

4. Enter the Read Write password and click OK (default password is
"public").

· If the Base Station is found and if you entered the right passwords, the
new IP address will be written to the selected Base Station, and a new
window appears with parameter tabs to change the configuration.

· If the Base Station is not found in the network and/or the configuration
is not read, or if the wrong password is entered, the message "Invalid
password" appears. Click OK to return to the main window of your Base
Station Management Tool and try again.

Using Whois:
07/21/04 09:09:19 IP block 153.69.254.254
Trying 153.69.254.254 at ARIN
Trying 153.69.254 at ARIN
NCR Corporation NCRWIN17 (NET-153-51-0-0-1)
153.51.0.0 - 153.87.255.255
NCR Corporation NCR-ECOMMERCE (NET-153-69-0-0-1)
153.69.0.0 - 153.69.255.255

Lovely. By simply following their stupid instructions, you too can
become part the NCR (i.e. AT&T) global network. I guess Compaq/HP has
never heard of RFC1918 which offers:
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)
for private networks. Use one of the above and NOT addresses owned by
NCR/AT&T.
