Conexant ADSL connection problem

I have moved my Conexant AccessRunner ADSL modem (the Dabs one) from my W98
machine to a new box running XP. I've adjusted the connection settings in the
control panel to the same ones as were in the W98 machine. I get a line
connection ok, but just cannot log on to my ISP (pipex, UK). I get either an
error 721 (remote computer didn't respond), or more usually 691 (user name
and/or password invalid on the domain). Needless to say, I have checked many
times that both are correct. So I'm left wondering whether there is something
about the XP setup that's different to the W98 one that I'm missing? when I
move the modem back to the first machine, it still functions okay.

I have tried different drivers for the modem (supposedly for XP, though the
o/s protests that they haven't been approved), although whichever I use I
still manage to get a line connection -- it's just the logging-on that
doesn't complete.


Any help appreciated.

Have you ensured that you installed the 'WAN' drivers for the card, and NOT
the 'LAN' ones (which are also on the cd-rom).

When I installed the same card on my Windows XP system, it was a breeze and
took just a matter of minutes to get it going (I'm with Freeserve B/B by the
way).

When it comes back and says the usual "these drivers are not signed..." etc,
just continue and ignore the warning. I don't think there are all that many
drivers (certainly the ones I've installed) that are signed and approved by
MS, so it should be safe to install, even with that warning.

Sorry to hear you still are not having any luck. I know from past posts when
people have had problems with the conexant cards, that it's come down to
them having installed the wrong drivers from the installation disk... i.e
the LAN, instead of the WAN drivers.

Now resolved the problem. My email log-in with pipex ends with the domain name
dsl.pipex.com, which is what I was trying to log onto my account with. The
account, however, ends with dsl.pipex.net! Doh!

No, your connection login should be (E-Mail Removed)
and POP3 (E-Mail Removed)

Also make sure "Client for MS networks" and "File and Printer sharing" are
not ticked in the properties of the connection. And don't forget to enable
the firewall unless you're using ZA or similar.
