Hi Folks,

I can conect my Linux PC to a WinXP Share (using Samba) but how do you:

Get the PC's to see each other e.g. Linux PC does not appear in WinXP
Netowork Neighberhood, how do I make this happen?

How can I connect my WinXP to a Linux Share?

Thanks,

Martin

You need to teach your Linux box to speak Microsoftese,
called SMB. The Linux package for it is Samba (Google
for it). The XP has to be able to access the shares
via TCP/IP (set SMB over TCP/IP).

The above is Samba client.

You have to configure and run the Samba server.

Klazmon.

Hi Folks,

I realised it was the Samba Client, as that was what I used to conect my
Linux PC to a WinXP Share. However trying to find out the correct
configuration to make evrything come together has NOT proved terrible easy.
Lots of people seem to have had this problem when you Google, but answers
appear to a bit thin on the ground.

Having got rather frustrated with Red Hat Version 9 bit which I guess is
getting a bit "long in the tooth", and may be the version of Samba was too
old, but it was what I had to hand at the time. I decided to download
Mandrake version 10.1. and give that a go. I was able to connect to my WinXP
share straight way, and when I looked at Network Neighberhood, low and
behold I can see my Linux PC. Wooohoo I am in buisness. Mandrake looks and
feels a lot more modern too.

Thanks anyway folks,

Martin

Yep. Note that 10.1 is not the latest release. They are also not
called
Mandrake any more - they changed their name to Mandriva after merging
with Connectiva (apparently there were also copyright issues with the
"Mandrake the Magician" publishers believe it or not). The latest
release is Mandriva LE 2005 (equivalent to Mandrake 10.2).
