Computers won't 'see' each other

I've had a simple home wireless network running successfully for some time,
just 2 PCs - 1 desktop and 1 laptop, with a printer connected to the desktop.
Now for some reason (probably only known to Bill Gates!) although both
computers still say they are connected to the network, they don't 'see' each
other, so can't share files and the laptop can't uaccess the printer.
Internet/email connection is still good on both - the desktop via cable to
the Linksys WRG54T router and the laptop via the wireless. When I try to
view computers on the workgroup I get a message on the desktop that the
workgroup is not accessible and that I might not have permission. I've
checked in 'My computer' and both computers are on the same workgroup.

Help please!

Do you have a firewall....and if so did you give your ip's permission to see
the share?

Yes I have a firewall, but even with it turned-off the computers still can't
see each other.

I think the real problem is that, even though the desktop is part of the
workgroup, it doesn't have permission to join it and I don't know how I can
give it that permission.
