I have a Linksys wireless router, connected to a cable modem,
networking a desktop and 1 laptop.

Internet connections on both computers work fine, as does VPN
pass-through. Only problem is, I can't seem to map the shared folders
on either machine to exchange data.

Could someone offer some detailed instruction?

Thanks,

A_C

Desktop - W2K SP4
Laptop - XP SP1
Linksys - WRT54G

If you are using windows XP, it is likely the XP firewall. You will
have to disable it or configure it properly to allow file sharing.

I'm using SP1 - The firewall comes with SP2.

This is not correct. SP1 comes with the firewall as well. You go into
your network properties, under the advanced tab, and see if it is
enabled or not.

Even if you are not using that particular software firewall, if you are
using any of the others such as zonealarm or norton, you need to
configure them properly to allow file sharing. Are you using any
software firewall?

Also, can you ping one machine from the other?
