Computers don't see each other

I'm having problems setting up a small Ethernet network at home, involving
my desktop and a laptop. Funny thing is, I had this working back in
September, and the only thing that's changed recently is that I now have a
broadband connection. The computers don't see each other, with or without
the cable modem plugged into the switch. According to the lights on my
switch, it's the laptop that's not communicating properly. The desktop is
getting broadband through the switch just fine. The computers have the same
workgroup, different IDs, different IP addresses. AFAIK, I have the client,
adapter and protocol (TCP/IP) set up correctly, and the client and protocol
are identical on both computers. File sharing is enabled on both computers
as is sharing of the C drives (read-only). Both computers are using Win
98SE. Each computer sees itself in Network Neighborhood, but not the other
machine. I'm figuring there must be one setting or switch that's not right.
Any ideas?

It's occurred to me that I installed Norton Internet Security on the laptop
since I had this set-up working in September. Could the firewall be the
cause of the problem described in my original post?

Yep, could be. Disable it and see what happens.

I uninstalled Norton Internet Security from both computers, and it made no
difference. They still didn't talk to each other. I'm stumped.
