computer was unable to reach a special network server (DHCP)

I have small peer to peer network with all computers
connected to SMC Barricade router , which is connected to
cable modem.

Recently, I often have problems with one of the machines,
running Win 98. After I boot it, I do not have internet
connection, cannot even access the router. Moreover, other
computers stop seeing the shared drives on that machine,
but they still see each other and have no problem with
internet connection.

Sometimes right after I reboot I get the message on the
problem machine: "Your computer was unable to reach a
special network server (DHCP). Only local network
connectivity may be present."

What does it mean?

Thank you for helping me,
alex

this may be the result of an irq issue with your network
card.
are you restarting your pc or are you shutting down.

Carey,

Thank you very much for responding.

I searched your site for DHCP. It does not have anything
about DHCP.

My immediate goal is just to understand the message,
before I start fixing the problem.

Thanks again,
alex

Andrew,

Thank you very much for responding.

This machine worked without a problem for years. I use it
by day and turn it off by night. I did not change any
hardware there and did not change any settings.
It just started happening recently by itself.

Thanks again,
alex

Carey,

Thank you very much for your help.

I did everything that tip #18 recommended. That did not
help.

Again, my immediate goal is just to understand the message
(i.e. translate it into English), before I start fixing
the problem.

Thanks again,
alex

My recommendation at this point is to reset your networking on that one
machine by deleting everything in it, rebooting and re-loading the client,
protocol and service.
