We chased this one around on an ME laptop using a PCMICA NIC card. It seems
that there is a timing problem during shutdown on some systems. The PC in
question sends out a message on the LAN as it is shutting down. The NIC
shuts down before the reply is received and processed, evidently by NDIS.
(Hang!) The usual symptom is a blinking horizontal cursor towards the lower
right of the screen. Some systems may eventually shutdown after a long wait,
perhaps several minutes.
Interestingly enough, removing all network entries and reinstalling them,
perhaps in a different order, may make the problem lessen, go away
completely, or just occur on a rare occasion.
Something about "shake and bake" the dll's and drivers I suppose. Changing
the slot and IRQ on some systems may help, since it may change the timing
and shutdown order.
