No, you cannot. Since the computer browser service is responsible
for cross subnet browsing this will totally remove your browsing function.
WINS aids in the process by resolving special NetBIOS names in order
for browsing to occur. Having said all that, it is common for some admins
to disable the service on all computers except DCs and 1 or so computers
in each subnet in order for them to act as subnet master browsers. Whether
or not this is good practice is a good question. Some say it is increases
network overhead and not necessary and some do so in order to prevent
browsing issues. I'd say if browsing is fine then leave the service alone on
all machines as removing that function on some machines may cause problems.
The computer browser does nothing more than tell the machine to act as a
master browser and participate in elections when a new master is needed
/ elected..
