Computer Browser/ Netbios Issue

The problem: When I open up "My network Places" on a computer and select
"entire network" I can only see the computers that are in my own V-Lan.

Some Background on about when this started: I recently added two 2008
servers to the domain, made them domain controllers, transferred the DHCP
information to the new servers and also transferred the FSMO roles to the new
servers. DHCP is working fine, our DNS is "active directory intergrated" and
it is working fine. We do not have any Wins servers on the network and havent
had any for several years. Any Suggestions on where to look? I've checked
everything I can think of. Thanks in Advance for any responds.

If you don't use WINS in each subnet you will not be able to browse outside
your own segment. I don't know why this was working before, but something
was clearly handling this - NetBIOS traffic is broadcast, isn't routable and
never has been.

Thanks for the reply Lanwench. I guess you could say I'm a little confused. I
always thought that Microsoft recommended not using Wins in a Windows 2000
type domain? I thought that was used primarilty for a Windows NT type domain
and for 95/98 machines? For that reason, when we built our active directory
domain about 6 years ago, we got away from WINS. I was thinking that the
"Master Browser" service function is what was responsible for populating
those machines and domains in "My Network Places" in place of Wins? I
remember us having a similar problem in the past and it ended up being a
misconfiguration on our switches with the "IP Helper" command. One other note
is that I noticed is that not only can I only see our V-Lan but I cannot see
other workgroups, etc. that I usually can see. Hope this helps. Thanks.

If you don't use WINS you should really disable NetBT on all computers.
NetBIOS is still needed if you want to browse, and without WINS it is
extremely chatty on the network. MS still recommends it if you want to
browse - and if you want to browse across routed subnets you'll need it. You
can then disable the computer browser service on all PCs. MasterBrowser is a
role you have with or without WINS if you've got NetBT enabled.

Lanwench,

Things are starting to make better sense now. Like you said earlier
there had to be something in place that previously allowed us to Browse over
each vlan since netbios is non-routable. I look in DHCP and there wasnt any
options configured in any of the subnets for Wins resolution. Its really odd.
I guess there really is no way we could have been browsing over any subnet
with the "computer browsing service" primarily Wins was enabled somewhere?
Its interesting. Thanks for all your help Lanwench.

You're most welcome. You really might consider installing & running it. I
find little downside (in networks the size I support, which aren't thousands
of nodes in size, that is)

FWIW - The computer Browser service is now disabled my default in Windows
Server 2008.

This is what may have populated your lists before.
