Complete newbie when it comes to wireless!

My wireless connection usually says 'no connections in range' or somesuch.

The other night I got 'A wireless connection is in range connect?' which I
did for a few seconds.

It was something called linksys.

How does this setup work?

Was I piggybacking my someone elses connection?
