Why is the range on a 5GHz system much less than that of a 2.4GHz, which is
greater than that of a 0.9GHz system? I'm confused...

Generally path loss increases with frequency. However, you can't just say
one works over a greater distance, without considering all the other
varialbles. Also the signals travel forever, unless blocked by something,
but attenuate with the square of the distance. For example, the signals
from the Voyager space probes are still being received from well beyond the
orbits of Neptune and Pluto. It's all a matter of path gain vs path loss.

James is right. However, if you want an actual 'rule of thumb' and a
pretty good description of 54g vs. 802.11x stuff, go to:

Then copy this below and do a search in your web browser for: "How
should I compare high-speed WLAN technology options?" and look at the
chart.

The internet is full of them, but a helpful guide:
