Compaq Presario 2100 to Linksys Router

The Compaq laptop comes with a WLAN 54g W450 wireless card. This card
accepts either 10 or 26 hex characters (40 or 104 bits). My Linksys
(BEFW11S4 V.2) 4 port wireless router accepts a passphase which then
displays 39 hex characters (64bit).

How do I mix these apples and oranges???? Or do I have to buy a Linksys
card for the laptop???

These are actually 64 bit and 128 bit.

The passphrase is hashed into a 40 bit key. Hopefully you have a way
to give the linksys a 5-byte value instead, otherwise you'll have to
get the spec for the hash. Linksys will be able to provide this.

The "missing" bits are the 802.11 header. Do a websearch for 40 bit
wep, and it will become clearer.

Actually, it's the other way around. I have to leave the Linksys router as
is since the rest of the network is Linksys. Just the Compaq is the
oddball. BTW, I will look at your links.

Hah hah..., After e-mails from Linksys, the first key in the router (which
is 10 hex chars long) is the correct key to use with the XP OS.
