I have a friend who has a compaq laptop (rather new, but don't know
model except its 2 ghz with 256meg and XP) with a pcmia wireless
adapter. It locks on to the d-link router ok (we haven't tested long
range but office is ok), but I could not find a signal strength bar in
the sys tray. I did find a network icon, but I'm looking for a
wireless icon with options like site survey, encrpytion options, etc.
I couldn't find it. It wasn't in programs either. I click on the
network icon, but had the typical options (repair, etc). Anyone have
any ideas? TIA

There should be an entry under the wireless card's manufacturer in Programs.
I don't have a Compaq, so it might be different, but it seems it should be
there. That is assuming it was loaded.

Its typically written on a sticker on the back. Find the model no and
do a websearch. If you know the exact model, Compaq's website will
probably have drivers there.

Sounds like the driver set is not installed. ID the card via device
manager, download the drivers from the mfr's website, install.

FWIW if this is a corporate laptop, then check company policy on
enabling the wireless before proceeding. For security reasons,
enabling the wireless w/o approval may be against policy, and messing
with it might invalidate your employment contract...
