Our community is having a public meeting next week with 4 potential
broadband suppliers interested in supplying us with a service. they are:

http://www.langreen.com/

http://www.langtoft.net/

http://www.ehotspot.co.uk/

http://www.neoeon.com/

We will be grant aided (Yorkshire Forward are the RDA)

Any comments/advice would be very much appreciated.

Do a Google search for "Invisble Networks" and the people who bought the
remnants "Mesh Broadband" - some commercial lessons can be had from the
(ex-) former.

Hope it works out but do your sums carefully.

"4 potential broadband suppliers"

Well it is clear you want broadband, and there's some funding, but
*what advice/comments* are you expecting without us knowing what
they know about the requirements you presumably put together (for
funding and for them to cosnider)... Is there something online to
indicate what they are 'bidding' for ? Or are they in the (awkward)
position of having to visit to sell their service as a possible solution
without knowing what you are after ? I doubt that (because without knowing
what you're asking for they won't be able to 'pitch' their presentation to
meet your technical knowledge, nor address any specifics you need met !)

Perhaps you can see that your original post was rather "open ended" in
its scope for advice/comments without anything for readers in the NG
to work from. Having been at some presentations, I know how akward
it can be to define requirements, (and from the other side) give a
presentation that doesn't raise more questions.

Would love to be a 'fly on the wall' Hope you find one which comes
'head and shoulders' above the others and does meet your needs. Peter.

Has BT's removal of the line loss test reduced the size of your potential user
base? I would say that you are very vulnerable to any changes that BT make.

we don't know why you want a community broadband scheme, or what it is
going to do beyond the obvious internet connection. Nor do we know
where you are. This makes it difficult for us to understand the need
for such a scheme and make useful suggestions.

Maybe you should tell us:

1. Is your BT exchange going to get ADSL in the next 18 months or so.
What proportion of the users would be able to get a service from it.
2. Where approximately the community is situated.
3. How many people you plan to serve and how much they will be
prepared to pay per month.
4. What speed or speeds of service you intend offerring.
5. How you envisage the scheme connecting to the rest of the world.
6. What "community" features you plan - will the scheme be an ISP,
will it provide mail servers, web space, games servers, chat rooms,
CCTV, local TV, or whatever else "on the local network" or just be a
conduit to the internet.
7. Is the area served, small / large / flat / hilly / urban / rural
etc etc
8. How much money the funding body can provide and is it milted to
capital or revenue and how long does it last

Tell us a story :-)

We have put out questionnaires to our 180 households and got back 25
definite.

Beyond that there is no one in the community who has a clue about the
technology.

The Parish Council is hoping to chose one of the suppliers on the night!

The grant aid offered is between 5 and 10K

Ours is one of the exchanges BT will not be upgrading in the next 18 months
if ever. (Tibthorpe, East Yorkshire) (MYTIB)

see above

25 people. Don't know how much they are prepared to pay. Anout half are
business users.

Depends on what the chosen supplier offers.

Noone has a clue!

Not decided. A basic connection to the outside I suppose.

Rural. Flat. About 4 x 4 miles

5K was mentioned. I believe it may have gone up to 10K. They are providing
an independent outside adviser on the night (tomorow).

The Parish Council Chairman has done all the work, I have never even met
him, but have done delivering of questionnaires and phoning round people.
