Is there a command-line tool for doing easy firewall config besides
lokkit? Guarddog and firestarter are x tools. thanks

shorewall and iptables can be managed with the editor of choice.

I've use gShield with good results in the past, though I roll my own
these days.

Adding to the answers You already got...:

May anybody please correct me if I go wrong in saying: "It all boils
down to iptables"?

All other solutions are scripts that apply pre-configured rules, or GUIs
that do just the same.

Yep.

Pretty much. Some of the firewalls have features which may help.
Shorewall has blacklist a blicklist file where you add entries of
items you want thrown away without logging.
