Hello,

I'm having real problems with this unit. I believe that it is
correctly configured as it does work, but the status page shows lots
of errors (see below). More importantly, although the re-connect
option is enabled, when the line is dropped it will not normally
automatically re-connect. This is happening 2 or 3 times per day.
This unit is the second one that I have had. (The first one stopped
connecting at all after about 3 month and was replaced.)

Usually, the unit can be soft-reset, via the browswer config pages, to
re-enable the connection, but about 25% of the time the unit is dead
and it will not even communicate via the browser and hard-reset is
required.

Also, the unit does get hot.

This is what the status screen tells me after being connected
(unusually) for 14 hours:

Showtime Firmware V. 3.14
Line State SHOWTIME
Modulation G.dmt
Annex Mode ANNEX_A
Startup Attempts 2
Max Tx Power -38dBm/Hz
CO Vendor ALCATEL_NETWORK
Elapsed Time 0 days 14 hours 4 minutes

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 10.2 23.0 dB
Line Attenuation 63.9 31.5 dB
Errored Seconds 10679 23
Loss of Signal 1 1
Loss of Frame 0 0
CRC Errors 1027 23
Data Rate 576 288 kbps
Latency FAST FAST

My ISP is Pipex.

Firmware
Firmware Version: ETHADSL_USB_080902_REL9
Customer Software Version: CA8XR-GN.1220.00F
Finding the latest firmware has been dificult. I have found some
files for the AMX-CA64, but I don't really want to flash the unit with
the wrong firmware. Any advice here would be appreciated.

My thoughts:

1. I have another duff unit and I should spens a bit more cash and get
a better brand with better support.

2. My line is dodgy, but then why does my SpeedTouch USB modem work
without any problems.

3. My firmware needs updating.

4. The unit is heat sensitive and should be returned.

Thanks for the help

Andrew Hirst

Thought 2 is favourite. Speedtouch's are more tolerant of dodgy lines.
With a down att of 63.9dB and an SNR of only 10dB, your line is
definitely on the borderline.

With the attenuation level on your line I'm surprised either the router or
modem can sync at all. 63bd is beyond BT's limits for ADSL, so don't ever
complain about your line to either BT or your ISP, because BT will just stop
your ADSL service and not let you have it back.

That said, the fact that the router sometimes won't respond when you try and
access it via a browser suggests that the unit is faulty, so you may be
looking at two seperate problems.

I have the same router and my line also shows aLine attenuation of 63.9dB
My SNR was similar too until I replaced my internal phone extension with
better (cat5) cable.
Do you have your router on the end of a long extension? Does it run along
side electrical or alarm cables?

The reason the modem seems to cope better is that they tend to be more
tolerant to the signal loss, but if you check the stats for the modem it
will probably show plenty of errors too..

As for the router not responding... Are you running P2P software like
emule? This kind of software can cripple even the most expensive routers
due to the sheer number of connections...
It's just a case of lowering the number of sources and reconnections. eg
emule runs happily over the AMX if you keep max sources below 300.
