Clients Not Connecting to Shared Folders on Network

Background: I "help" a small business with their compuuter needs. They have
a client-server environment with one Win 2003 Server and 5 clients. They are
connected through a combined "cable modem/router" device via Cat5 cables.
The routing is done using DHCP with everything being assigned dynamically.
The workgroup is the default MSHOME. The users are given permissions to
access the shared folders.

Problem: All clients and server can access the Internet. All but one of the
clients can access the shared folders on the server. The client could access
the shared folders several days ago but not now.

Troubleshooting: I tried repairing the IP connection thinking there might be
a conflict to no avail.

Request: Can anyone provide some guidance on if they have faced this same
issue and what was the solution? Thank you!

Are you using the DHCP from the router to assign IP addresses? If so,
try assigning static addresses to each machine. I have found that as
they age, routers sometimes don't work very well in acting as DHCP servers.

Before assigning static addresses, you might want to try first clearing
the router of addresses (and reset the hub or switch, if applicable)
and release/restore all IP addresses on the clients.

Other things you might try are exchanging the flaky machine with another
in order to eliminate the possibility that you have a bad router port
or cable. Also, try installing a new Ethernet card. If you have the
ethernet card on the motherboard, they often go bad. I always keep a
few spare ethernet cards around for this purpose.

Hope this is some help.

hi,
in workgroup enviroment the users must match on username and password from
workstation to server. check to see if somethings goes wrong on server : that
particular user if still exists, if is locked out if stiil have wrights on
that share.
it is usefull if you could provide what error is when the user try to access
the share on the server.

Maybe you should assign a static IP for the server which host shared
folder.

In the little scale network, clients often couldn't resolve the computer
name through broadcast.
