Guru's,
Trace from 2K member server shows WINS query for the FQDN of an external
domain instead of the NETBIOS name of the domain. Any ideas on how this can
occur?
Thanks in advance
M

Order of name resolution is
lmhosts file
hosts file
wins
dns
broadcasts

Understanding this order its perfectly understandable that Wins would be
consulted. When the request hits DNS it should be resolved since you forward
your dns to the isp/internet providers dns server(s)

Yes, we actually need WINS to be consulted because DNS will never resolve it.
We have static <1C> and <1B> WINS records for 'NBDOMAIN'. The issue is that
the WINS query looks like:

UDP: Src Port: NETBIOS Name Service, (137); Dst Port: NETBIOS Name Service
(137); Length = 58 (0x3A)
NBT: NS: Query req. for NBNAME.DOMAIN.COM <00>

Why doesn't DNS resolve the domain name. It should. How is your dns
configured?

I don't understand the purpose of wins entries for nbdomain when the domain
name appears to be nbname.domain.com. What is the real domain name?

Are you running Active Directory? What exactly is the issue you are having
that is getting you to capture packets?
