Client PC loses contact with network drives and freezes

Client:
Windows XP SP2
Marvel Gigabit integrated into ASUS motherboard

Server:
Windows 2003 RC2
D-Link DGE-528T Gigabit Ethernet

The problem I have is after a while, my client PC loses contact with the
network drives. When I open Windows Explorer, and expand My Computer, it
just sits there and requires a restart. There is nothing in the event logs
to help me.

Any ideas?

Richard.

I always recommend not having mapped drive letters at all, they are usually
nothing but trouble. Replace them with UNC Path "Shortcuts" if at all
possible.

What DNS server does this client point to for Secondary and what is this DNS
servers relationship to your network?

I have a very simple network setup for a SOHO environment. The Win2003
server acts as domain server, web server and DNS server for the network. The
client PC has a static IP addess, with no secondary DNS assigned. The
network comes in on a NATed firewall, with port 80 forwarded to the server.

The reason for no secondary DNS is that as I am behind a NATed firewall,
www.mydomainname.com resolves local to the server, but in the world outside
it resolves to the ADSL modem. When I used an external secondary DNS,
occasionally, the client used to reference this, and when I went to
www.mydomainname.com, I get the external IP address returned, and end up at
the modem rather than the webserver. <hope this makes sense!>

Test adding your AD DNS server as primary and secondary on the client.

There is no reason to have an "external" DNS server on the clients of an AD
domain.

I cannot have the same IP as primary and secondary. However, my server does
have 2 IP addresses to allow for VPN traffic. So trying primary to be IP
address1 and secondary to be IP address 2. Will let you know the result.

The reason I cannot have an external DNS is because www.myserver.com has IP
of 192.168.1.2 internally, but externally 81.100.x.x. If I ping 81.100.x.x
the response is sent by the modem which in reality owns that IP, and only
port forwards to the server...

I get an error from WindowsXP when I try. - note, I am using a static IP
address, not DHCP.
"The atlernate DNS server cannot be the same as the preffered DNS server.
Pease neter a different IP address for the alternate DNS server"

I'm also trying to turn off the media sense on the client, as googleing
indicates that there is a bug in windows with gigabit cards.

With primary and secondard DNSs set, and Media Sense disabled, I still get
the mapped drives freezing. One interesting point is the \\server from the
client freezes, but \\clientPC from the server works.

This time, I did get an error message:
No Domain Controller is available for domain MYDOMAIN due to the following:

There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.
..

Make sure that the computer is connected to the network and try again. If
the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
