Client For Microsoft Networking user list

I'm having problems networking a win98 desktop with two XP-Pro machines that
use simple file sharing (for which I will post another query).
In the mean time I entered several user names when using Client For
Microsoft Networking because I thought I had to have the same user and
passwords on the win98 machine as on the XP-Pro machines.

Can someone tell me how to view all the users that I entered so that I can
delete the unwanted ones. I can see each user has a pwl file in the
c:\Windows folder but I'm assuming there are registry entries associated
with these and I dont want to delete the pwl files and leave a lot of crap
hanging around. Is there is an appropriate dialog for doing this?

thanks,

Keith

Password files can become corrupt and in the past I have used the FIND
facility to locate them all, renamed them to .old and rebooted. Win98 SE
then recompiles the necessary .pwl files. There are one or two points that
you need to be aware of when doing this - nothing major i.e. how to re-input
the necessary information. I used Microsoft KB articles 135197, 148925,
141858 and 137361 in the past to help me. Unfortunately at the time of
posting this the Microsoft.com search engine is down for one of its regular
maintenance routines, so I cannot check the contents for relevance.

Thanks for responding Alan,.

My problem isnt so much that the pwl files are corrupt - all the user
passwords work correctly. Its just that I only need one network login id.
What Im looking for is the legitimate way to remove unwanted network users
rather than just manually delete the associated pwl files.

Any ideas?

I haven't done it but can you not use the User and the Password access via
the Control Panel to do what you want?

From Control Panel the "Users" option gives me the wizard to set up a
multi-user environment. At the moment the 98 machine uses one user profile -
same desktop, favorites etc. I've never bothered setting a multiuser
environment and I dont think going through the wizard will help me.

"Passwords" allows me to change the password for the current user, but I
dont see the other users to delete them.

Is there an Administrator account that I can log on to?

I'll have a play and post back when I figure out what to do.

Thanks for responding,

Keith

So lets get this straight. You have created additional users on your PC but
the User wizard does not show them?

When you check Profiles in Windows Explorer, are the other uses shown?

When you check Profiles in the Registry, are the other users shown there as
well?

I have read conflicting information re the Administrator for 98 and 98SE.
The Resource Kit says the first person to log on after a Windows install
automatically becomes the Administrator and this will be shown in the Users
Wizard. I can verify that this does not happen. Another piece of information
says that everyone has the same privileges unless the Policy Editor has been
run to allocate otherwise.

Hi Alan,

Yes - I think. Let me say this... I've never added any users via Control
Panel/Users, and attempting to do this just brings up the wizard. However,
what I did do was keep adding new login user names and passwords using the
login screen that is presented after choosing Client For Microsoft Networks
as my primary network logon. Each of these does seem to have a unique
profile, for instance the "quick type" drop down list on web entry forms is
different for each user.

> When you check Profiles in Windows Explorer, are the other uses shown?

Im showing my ignorance, but I dont know how to do that

under HKEY_USERS all I have is .DEFAULT and Software
under HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Network / Recent I have the name of the XP machine
shared folder with the current Win98 login ID
Not sure that I'm looking in the right place though.

I'm going to install Poledit to see what that can tell me - never used it
before.

To tell you the truth I dont know much about the networking side of win98.
Something I need to get to grips with.

Thanks for input,

Keith

First things first, when you do a search for .pwl files using the FIND
facility, does the result give you all the users that you have created?

To check profiles in Windows Explorer, go to Windows\Profiles. There you
should see a list of all the profiles that have been generated.

Regarding the Registry, when you look in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Profile List, you should see
an identical list of users. Basically, I believe Explorer and the Registry
should have identical settings.

I would use the Policy Editor as a last resort - but that is just me! On my
system I have Microsoft Family login setup so that multiple users can use
the same PC but all have there own unique settings for Desktop\Start-up etc.
When activated the logon screen gives a list of all the valid users for the
PC. You may want to do this to check what the system thinks it has setup.
However, I don't know if you can swap between Client for MS Networks and
Family login without causing further problems!

yes.

checked c:\Windows and there is no sub-folder called Profiles

Checked all registry hives (mine start HKEY_...) and I dont have ProfileList

thanks for the suggestions though.

To get to the bottom of this I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get
into win98 / xp networking properly - like buy a book .
This is an annoyance more than anything because it just means that I've got
several network id's hanging about on my system. Not the end of the world I
guess.

thanks again,

Keith
