I am setting up a win2003 server with a win2k client
connected with a crossover cable.

I have tcp/ip installed on each computer and the nic cards
are both working.

I have installed a domain controller, dns, and dhcp on the
server.

dhcp's scope is 100.100.0.0 - 100.100.0.10

server name is sienfeld.

server ip address is 10.10.0.1

dhcp server is sienfeld.server1.com

under active directory users and computers I created a
user named george w/password

I dont know if this matters but I have not done the online
activation yet, I just installed the

server yesterday.

on the client win2k computer i have obtain ip address
automaticly, but it still gets an addres
out of the scopes range.

I have tried to join the doamin but win2k cannot find it.

and neither computer can ping each other .

I have set up workgroups before but this is my first
attempt at a server.

Could someone please help?

Thanks

well the easy one first. since it is a crossover cable (i.e. no router) for
a ping to work they have to both have an IP address in the same subnet and
since it sounds like your trying to use dhcp (and failing) you have no
addresses to ping to. By design it shouldn't work at this point.
So Id probably start by trying to ping 127.0.0.1 on both boxs (this is the
internal loop address) and see if the ip stacks are working internally.
Second (assuming the inside ping works), I'd statically assign an address to
the workstation that is in the range of the server (100.100.0.2 ?) and using
possibly network neighborhood see if the netbios workgroup community shows
up (tests a little deeper into the stack and some basic connectivity stuff).
Finally after getting that to work, I would set the workstation back to
getting the address dynamically and debug the dhcp issues (if you still have
any).

Hi,

You said the server's IP is 10.10.0.1, but you set up a DHCP scope of
100.100.0.0 - 100.100.0.10?
I recommend you delete this DHCP scope and change it to 10.10.0.2 -
10.10.0.10.

Thanks,
