Client can not connet to VPN from Internet

The problem is that from the internet I can not VPN to a new Windows 2003
sp1 server. However, I can VPN to it if I plug in to the same T1 router
that the server is connected to and use a different IP address (Router has
an 8 port switch built in with about 14 available IP address).

The server has two network connections. One to my LAN and the other to my T1
Router set up for VPN. For example lets say the VPN port of the server is
66.66.66.19 and my client is set up as 66.66.66.21. My client can connect
via VPN and it works fine.

Connecting from the internet using a dial up account (that has vpn support)
I get an error 800 on my xp client. Also I can not ping the vpn server
(checked the inbound and outbound filter settings and they are okay).

The xp client configuration was working fine on my old Win2K server.

I configured the server VPN using the win2003 wizard. The only changes I
made are to set up a static address pool of 10 IP address and Cut back on
the number of ports from 256 to 20 (10 PPTP and 10 L2TP ports).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best regards

800 is a generic error code which doesn't give much info. Change the
client setting from Auto to either pptp or l2tp for a more specific error.

It could be a problem with the client. Is the Windows firewall on?

Hi Bill:

Thanks for your reply.

With the client windows firewall enabled or disabled and VPN network
properties set to PPTP I get Error 678, Set to L2TP IPSec I get error 781

At the server (which is not accessible to me right now) when I tried to turn
off the windows firewall I was not able to open it. I got a short message,
something to the effect, that another application was using it.

It should be set to the install default install settings.
