Clie UX50 data transfer query

As a new user, the only way I can find to transfer data files (such as MP3)
wirelessly to my Clie UX50 is to send them as e-mail attachments. Am I
missing something - is there an easier way? Data Import seems only to work
with the USB link. I want to avoid having to use the USB connection if I
can.

Set up a web server on your PC or file server, and use the built-in web
browser? That way you can share out your entire MP3 collection, and pick
and choose from the PDA without doing anything extra on the desktop.

Many thanks for the suggestion. I have WinXP Home - wouldn't I need Pro to
do as you suggest?

No, you can find a lot of free web server software out there that works just
fine with Windows XP Home Edition.

Thanks again for your help Art. Very much appreciated.

I've found and successfully installed Apache 2.0. I can access 'localhost'
from the browser on the desktop quite happily, but each time I try on the
Clie, I get 'Invalid Network Settings'. I've also tried using the browser to
access the name I gave to the server - again this works fine on the desktop,
but I get 'Invalid Network Settings' on the Clie. The Clie accesses Internet
sites without any problem.

Any ideas why this should be happening? I'm not very clued-up on all this,
as you'll gather!

Kind regards,

Ryder Cowan

Try accessing your desktop machine with the same name as you use for network
hotsync, or the IP address. And make sure that the web server is either
listening to all interfaces (usually denoted as 0.0.0.0), or at least the IP
address it uses on your lan. By default, most web servers are set up to
only listen to localhost (127.0.0.1) and not the outside world.

Apache can be a tad hard to set up as the first web server -- for Windows,
there's easier configurable alternatives -- some like 602Pro LAN SUITE (from
software602.com), which also doubles as a mail server with anti-spam, proxy
server and DNS caching server in addition to being a web server. It's free
(you have to register, though) for up to 5 users.

But if you get Apache to work, it's a good choice!

I've now got Apache to work, thanks to your help Art. I really appreciate
it, and your suggestion in the first place.

I am able to access the desktop from the Clie using the IP address, as you
suggested, and download my MP3 files very easily, without fiddling with the
USB connection.

One think I am finding is that after I download an MP3 file into the Clie's
MSAUDIO folder on Internal Media, the Audio Player cannot 'see' the file
immediately. I need either to do a soft reset, or put the Clie into
power-saving shutdown and restart, before the downloaded track will appear
in the Audio Player's list. It will then play perfectly though. I don't get
this probem when downloading tracks using the USB connection, so I suspect
there must be a glitch in the Clie's OS somewhere.

Kind regards,

Ryder Cowan

I believe I've seen this problem reported once before, and the workaround
was to start a "transfer" from the audio player (without being connected)
and then abort it. This forces a re-inventory.

Another issue is that the Clies apparently can't handle really long file
names, so you may have to rename the files after downloading them if the
..mp3 extension got cut off.

Once again, many thanks Art. That's done the trick nicely, and is much more
convenient than a soft reset.

Kind regards,

Ryder Cowan
