Hi,

my customer wants to start over with a clean WINS Database.
The only information i can find on that is NT4 oder Win2000 related so i
want to make sure if they still apply to Win2003 ADs.

Its a Server 2003 R2 AD Forest with a root and 4 child domains.
It spans multiple Sites. About 200 Servers and 5500 Workstations.
Exchange 2003 cluster and also other Windows Cluster Systems.

There are about 14000 entries in WINS right now.

To clean up i would do the following on all WINS servers simultaneously:
-stop WINS Service
-move system32\wins\*.* into another Directory
-start WINS
-Nbtstat -RR

Is that a valid approach? Any additional steps like reboot all DCs, all
Servers?
What trouble is to be expected?

Thanks
Thorsten

Does it also apply to 2003?

I assume yes, but just assuming isn't enaugh with a network of that size.

Hello ThorstenK,

If you read the article you can see the "Applies to" section at the end.

I'm so sorry. The german translation hasent been updated and the microsoft
site keeps redirecting me there. I always go for the english version but this
time i checked the "applies to" before switching the language.

in German:
• Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.51
• Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Standard Edition
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

Thanks

Hello ThorstenK,

The english version:

. Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
. Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
. Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.51
. Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Standard Edition
. Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (32-bit x86)
. Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit x86)
. Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86)
. Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web Edition

Here is your part
Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003
To delete and re-create your WINS database, follow these steps: 1. Click
Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Administrative Tools, double-click the Services icon, click
Windows Internet Name Service, and on the tool bar, click the Stop icon.
3. Create a temporary folder (for example, WINS_Old). Move the current contents
of the WINS folder to the temporary folder.

WINS is located at: %SystemRoot%\System32\WINS\
4. Restart WINS.
When WINS is started, new WINS database files will be created.
